Day 30 - Anasazi Cliff Dwellers

Tuesday, August 19th - Denver Colorado area

Today was a beautiful day with very little humidity (finally) and we visited the 800-1000 year old site of the Cliff Dwellers...

This was an amazing site. The structures here are the original ones that were built so long ago and are in very good condition for their age... part of this is because of the expert building techniques and materials that they used to build them.

The gift shop is housed in the Pueblo that is also built on this site, which was used in the 1800's and 1900's by a local indian family that maintained this site and entertained tourists with native regellia and music...

This is the inside of a smaller Pueblo that is built on the site... notice the grinding stations on the floor...

The "houses" are three or four stories high and many families could live in each one. The entrance doors are located on the top levels and had to be reached by ladders, which would be pulled up to protect them from their enemies... the lower windows would be closed with a window rock for security...

This is a space behind the home between the canyon wall and the back wall of the houses... this is where they would store their trash and dead bodies in the winter untill they could be buried in the spring when the ground thawed...

Deb is looking at a large fire pit area that used to be enclosed... probably the village "Living Room"...

We are standing at the far end of the dwellings... notice the ladder and the balcony...

They had a very beautiful view from their front porches!

On they way to Golden, CO for the evening, we stopped and visited the Denver Temple.

Tomorrow evening we need to be in Salt Lake City so Deb can work in the Family History Library all day Thursday... do you think she is excited?
