Day 43: Honor, Duty, Country...

Greetings from Sturbridge, MA...

Today we returned to West Point Military Academy to participate in a two-hour on-campus tour...

The guided-tour took us first to the West Point Chapel...

This chapel is over 200 feet long, front-to-back and over 90 feet side-to-side creating the shape of a cross if viewed from above... Every stained-glass window was donated by a graduating class until all windows were filled in 1976...

We then made our way past various monuments and sites until we arrived at the Parade Grounds where we were able to see cadets assemble for the noon meal in front of the barracks and the Mess Hall... 4000 cadets are fed in 20 minutes!

On the hill behind the barracks is another view of the Chapel...

We then went to the cemetery where we visited the graves of many famous West Point Graduates...

This is the grave of Lt Col. Edwards White II, who died in the Apollo launch pad fire in 1967...

This is the crypt for General Egbert L. Vielle (Class of 1847)and his wife Juliette... He actually designed the pyramid befor his death...

This is him...

This is her...

After the tour, I took a photo of Deb with a couple of Cadets...

And in front of the Visitor's Center...

During dinner, we discussed how cool it is that Deb was born on this historic campus where so many famous military officers have been trained and served... I could tell it was an honor that became very real for her today...

After leaving West Point, we crossed the Hudson River and drove through Peekskill, NY...

Through Connecticut...

And into Massachusetts (too dark for a picture of the Welcome sign).

Tomorrow, we will spend the day in Old Sturbridge Village, and depending on how much we are able to see, we may stay another night here before going to Concord and Lexington on the way to Portland, ME.

You might know, the chic has all the rank!:) Nice pose, Deb. I sense you had a ball touring West Point MA. You two will have lots to remember in those long, cold winter nights in the future. And tall tales to tell your grandkids. I got the photos printed today of Hyrum, Kaleb and Ammon playing the bugle. They are so cute. Hyrum had a ball. Wouldn't take a lot for the look on his face.
I think the cadets need to design a new uniform!
Doesn't take long to drive through a state there, does it?
That is some chapel they have there. They must have to really shove the food down to feed that many in such a short time. All eat and no talk!
Make sure you go see the old North Church in Boston, where the lanterns were hung to announce the arrival of the Redcoats,
one if by land, two if by sea, and I on the opposite shore will be, ready to ride and spread the alarm to every Middlesex, village and farm.(The Midnight Ride of Paul Revere)
I'll bet that reenactor felt a little embarassed when it took three tries to get his musket to fire? (Old blog) I highly suspect that happened alot in battle.
You getting tired of traveling yet?
When will you head West again?
Todd is still off duty, waiting for the powers-that-be to finish their inguiry. He is anxious to get back to work.
Anxious to see if you send a message on your blog today.
