Day 05 - Over the Rockies

Saturday, 27 August

Our journey today took us through Steamboat Springs, Colorado.  There were thousands of bikers on Highway 40 because they had a race yesterday and today they were participating in "Bike Colorado".  They were hardy souls because it was hot and the hill they were climbing gained over 3000 feet (and they were already at 6000 feet).

We walked through the shops and Deb got her photo with one of my heroes...

Deb found this T-shirt hanging in one of the stores... my kind of shirt!

We really don't know how any of these shops stay open for business because they are all so expensive.

We had lunch in Walden, CO (elk burger, mmmm), and then headed up, up, up, crossing into Wyoming...

Along the route, we saw some incredible rock sculptures... this country is so beautiful... it takes your breath away around most every corner.

We stopped in Laramie, WY, home of the University of Wyoming.  Many buildings are constructed from the local stone... this Episcopal church is a fine example of the stone architecture.

On our way out of Wyoming back into Colorado, we encountered a lot of road construction... but we were having so much fun talking to each other, we did not care... we are not in a hurry and that is fun!

Soon we were back in Colorado.  We decided we would make it to Sterling for the night...

Along the way, we found our "new" church... it was in Virginia Dale, Colorado, and it only has services on the 2nd Sunday of the month!

Next to the church were some examples of God's rock work...

Down the road is another example... there are so many mounds that have rocks precariously perched... it is an amazing sight.

We saw hundreds of pronghorn antelope tonight as dusk started to set in.  They are beautiful creatures but I don't like driving at sunset when they are actively moving to feed...

As we decended the east slopes of the rockies, we entered the grassy plains... anyone who says we are running out of space in the USA has never been to eastern Colorado!

Just before the sun went down, Deb took this photo of an abandoned shack... this is the sun lit side...

And this is the shadow side... it was a beautiful sunset.

Tomorrow we head southeast to Kansas.
