Day 07 - "Damn it to hell, I forgot the mail"

Monday, 29 August

On the way out of Kansas, we stopped in Marysville, the home of the Pony Express Station #1.

This is also the county seat and this old historical courthouse made for a nice photo op.

This is the outside of the original Pony Express Station #1.  These stations were placed every 70-90 miles along the route.  Riders would "pass the baton" in the relay of mail and then get about 8-10 days rest before taking another leg of the ride.

This is an example of one of the overland coaches that were also used to transport the mail out west.

Debra is standing inside of the original portion of the station.  To the left is a blacksmith forge and the riders bunk is to the right.  The stalls are behind her.

Marysville is also known for the black squirrel.

This is an explanation of how the squirrels came to be and the laws that protect them.

We drove all over the town looking for a squirrel and Deb finally spotted one up in a tree eating a black walnut.

We left Kansas...

crossed the Missouri River..
And drove to see the new Kansas city Missouri Temple, which is still under construction.

Debra took this very nice photo just as the sun was about to set.
This is going to be a beautiful temple when it is completed.
